Sunny days for Electronics

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Days of charging your mobile phones merely with USB ports and A/C plugs are over. Just flash your device under the sun’s rays and you are ready to go. The Sun’s rays can be utilised as the most natural resource not only for humans but also for all types of electronics. Smartphones, cameras, e-readers and music playing devices that spend hours and days within our purses and luggage rendering it to lose charge easily.

Batteries to backup are nowhere around, especially for sales people who are in the middle of cracking a huge deal or if you are hiking or merely traveling. All devices need charge and require power to help you stay connected. The Sun’s rays are the saviour for your electronic device.

PowerTrip is a device created by Ecosol, a company based out of Ottawa that will enable you to keep you device alive with the help of the Sun. This device is roughly about the size of a deck of playing cards that keeps a battery through the USB port or the available wall socket. The device can be placed on a window sill that is sunny and charge your electronic device through the solar panel on one side. The plug which swivels from the sides comes with several connectors that feed the devices. Ideas taken from its sister, the PowerStick, the device comes with several mini and micro USB ports that enable it to connect to Apple devices too. The dream doesn’t end there, the PowerTrip, fully charged can give power to your smartphone for around five hours with a microprocessor to stop it from overcharging. The device can store energy to charge all gadgets until it runs out, a power meter at the side indicates the state of the battery charge.

PowerTrip comes neatly packaged with a cloth bag that holds a battery and connectors. Connectors can be plugged into a full-sized USB port that lies on the PowerTrip’s side, or simply use the USB cable to charge the electronic device.

Dreams do come true as the PowerTrip has memory ranging from 4GB, 8GB and 16GB with the 4GB model starting at $ 109 U.S.

Other sister replications include the Eclipse, which is a $159 solar backpack that charges your devices up to four watts from its panel in the front pocket that is flexible. Channelling devices through a charger adapter of the car, it can power devices like phones or music playing devices, but stop at laptops. However, it does have a computer pocket for holding the laptop with a 15 inch screen and other regular compartments for books, clothes, CDs etc.

The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is priced at $89.99 can be charged with solar energy with a slim and flat panel of solar cells on the top. This device can remain without light for 3 months and has an application on the computer indicating the status of the charge along with a press button on the keyboard. This communicates with the computer using a USB wireless transceiver.

Devices that require new batteries can use the C. Crane Solar Powered Battery Charger to charge depending upon the type and the capacity of the battery.

Expansion Plans for DragonWave with Nokia Siemens Buyout

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Microwave transport business will see a new acquisition in the first quarter of 2012, as the Ottawa-based DragonWave Inc., a wireless technology company is set to acquire Nokia Siemens Networks’. The deal will be closed in € 110 milllion or $ 152 million U.S. This will be a strategic partnership. In the world of wireless technology, this acquisition will not be looked at negatively as it will be welcomed by customers of Nokia Siemens and of DragonWave Inc. This move will benefit customers with the beginning of strategic innovations in the world of wireless technologies that has not taken place for DragonWave over the last year.

DragonWave is a Canadian wireless equipment provider, manufacturing equipment that sends or transports data efficiently, between cell towers and the core network for wireless operators. The acquisition between the two companies will involve the undertaking of around 360 employees currently working in Nokia Siemens in Shanghai and Milan. These employees will be working under DragonWave and help expand their customer base.

Consolidation is inevitable and this transaction did not seem surprising to Kris Thompson, National Bank Financial analyst. He also added that with a large installed base of microwave radios by Nokia Siemens, the acquisition would enable DragonWave to gain businesses in the future. DragonWave can expect a surge in the demand for the new technologies that are being developed.

DragonWave depends upon Clearwire Corp. for a large proportion of its revenues. DragonWave stocks, like most small-cap technology companies have been on a high and low ride for investors in the past. Clearwire Corp. has missed the revenue targets as it was expected the last year. Yet, there was an unprecedented drop in sales, the last year.

Nokia Siemens Networks seems positive about the acquisition. The company’s outlook gives a positive turn for the company’s existing customer base. The company also intends to look at the acquisition from a more futuristic point of view, by accepting the new technologies that will be introduced. Marc Rouanne, the head of Network Systems at Nokia Siemens believes that with this strategic outcome, customers will continue to benefit from the high-quality services. He also believes that there will be no compromise in the sales support that will be given from the Nokia-Siemens Networks. With the introduction of DragonWave, the best-of-breed products of the company will continue to harness the access to the industry’s leading technology. He also mentioned that the Nokia Siemens intends to benefit greatly from the DragonWave’s capabilities that have been proven over the years. The company will benefit from the introduction of innovative product developments and the introduction of the end-to-end solutions.

With this both companies will benefit and provide customers with new technologies. Customers will also benefit from the innovative products that will be provided with end-to-end solutions from one company. Only numbers for the coming years, will show whether this acquisition will strategically benefit not only DragonWave and Nokia Siemens but also, the eager customers.

RIM spreads its wings overseas

Monday, November 28th, 2011

RIM based out of Waterloo, intends on strengthening the customer base in U.S. and other overseas markets with new devices designed and engineered to win these markets. U.S. is the biggest market for the company and intends to introduce the products like the Touch screen phone called the Curve 9380 which is a less expensive version than that introduced in August.

All the new products have been designed and engineered to suit the needs of the emerging markets. Kyle Dorcas, the lead product manager of the BlackBerry 9790 which is a cost-effective and smaller version of the Bold 9900, has been successful in selling it in the largest market for the product in the U.S. and in Europe. He is interested in the success of the Bold 9900, which is slated to go on sale in Indonesia, one of RIM’s most successful markets overseas.

Mr. Dorcas believes that there is a great demand for these capabilities of the device in a smaller package. Mr. Dorcas believes that the one with him is a slimmer version of the Bold and that not all want the similar sizes in a phone.

RIM seems to head abroad for all its consumer demand, seeing that there is a great demand for these products abroad. Although, in the United States, there has been a slump in market share from sixty percent to merely nine percent in two years, emerging markets such as Africa have shown an increase in demand for the BlackBerry. The shipments to Africa grew by 741 percent, each year, according to the research conducted by Canalys.

RIM hopes to maintain its position in emerging markets due to the fact that there is less competition in these developing countries, although the scenario is changing over the years.

Google Inc’s operating system called Android and Apple Inc’s iPhone have created waves in developing countries and reduces the stronghold of RIM by taking almost 52.5 percent of the market share and 15 percent respectively. These figures include the competition posed by other market players too that aided in reducing RIM’s share to only 11 percent.

Patrick Spence, managing director (global sales and regional marketing), RIM London, is optimistic that the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) platform will dominate markets in these areas due to its popularity, its affordability and the fact that the application is more interactive that text messages. This will be done by engaging its marketing strategy in each country by leveraging the potentials of local software developers.

His take on the success of the Android operating system, is that due to the popularity of the global smartphones and its growth, Google Inc’s has succeeded in gaining market share and RIM will continue to give them a fight for it.

Mr. Spence believes in the capabilities of the BlackBerry to grow beyond the 70 million mark of its consumer base due to the focus and strengths of the company. He is assured with the position of the company despite the competition given by smartphones. With marketing strategies in South Africa targeting the youth in university campuses and making it a buzzword around colleges, Mr. Spence believes that RIM phones will gain its hold along with the ability of customizing its brand to specific markets. Andrew Bocking, vice-president (handheld software), points out that PlayBook tablet sold well it Britain due to the ability to customize the phone to a preloaded BBC iPlayer.

Siri is found to have a distinctive human voice. This was the driving force for the big demand iphone 4S has.  Siri receives your voice and replies to simple questions. It also accepts commands given by you. It also cautions the user to protect the phone and its internal software.

The voice quality is awesome. The noise cancellation capability is an added advantage in iPhone4S. It has a 512MB RAM.

The other Features

The other unique feature of iPhone4S is the Bluetooth chip which connects with very little power. The button cell of a common watch battery power is what the bluetooth operates on. This can last for years to come.

The vibrator in iPhone4S is very soft and quieter. Hence, it is less annoying in comparison to the previous iPhones. The front facing camera serves two things. One, in taking a self picture and the other in communicating via face time.

It sports the same rectangular look with stainless steel bezels round the sides. It has a SIM slot on the side. Being a world phone, iphone4S supports both GSM and CDMA networks. Both the GSM Micro- SIM cards as well as the CDMA roaming SIM can be used in iPhons4S.

The iPhone4S can withstand a continuous talk time up to 8 hours on 3G and 14 hours on 2G GSM network and a 200 hours standby. In spite of being upgraded, the power consumption is pretty efficient.

  • Polycom conference phones use high end technology and advanced audio processing software. This results in very good voice clarity at both ends to eliminate any chance of miscommunication.
  • Polycom conference phones use powerful microphones that have 360 degrees pickup. This means that the speaker can be anywhere in the room and his words are easily picked up by the Polycom conference phone. The speaker phone restricts the mobility of the speaker by requiring him to stand in front of the microphone itself.
