Will Sony Finish Erricson?

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Sony is looking to become smart now. It seems to be fed up with making the same old phones. It now wants to concentrate only on the production of smart phones as people the world over are getting smarter as they are more on more inclined to use the new smart phones that give extra features than just music and videos. Smart phones carry advanced features of fast web browsing, 3D games and 3G technology with HD video resolution. The company said on Friday it would shift all its production to smartphones during 2012.

From the sale of its traditional phones Sony expected more margins but with the tough competition from Android and the popularity of 4S iPhones Sony wants to play wise and follow the popular trend. Recently Sony announced its financial performance declaring

income before taxes as 31 million Euros. It is nearly 33 percent more than the sales of earlier quarter. As of date smartphones account for about 80 percent of Sony Erricson’s total sales. Sony seems to be feeling that it can best work alone. There are rumors that Sony is looking to amalgamate the partnership with Erricson and project itself as the sole proprietor. Although the reason is best known to the CEO however there are confirmed reports Sony wants to buy Ericsson’s 50% stake in the JV. If the Reuters reports has to be believed Ericsson’s 50% stake in Sony Ericsson comes to around $1.5-billion. Let us hope this works for Sony.

If we were to go by what analysts say then Sony is best at Play Stations and Music gadgets. Other companies producing smartphones are much ahead of Sony. It is certainly not going to be easy for Sony to keep up with the pace in competition. There are supersonic sprinters in the race of smartphone production. The bad news of BlackBerry may sound like jingle bells to the ears of the rivals including Sony. Other positive development for Sony is that its latest produce Xperia arc and Xperia neo along with ‘Live With Walkman’ a Body and Soul combination of Sony and Google i.e. Body of Sony and Soul from Google Android’s Gingerbread 2.3 based software has sold fairly in Asian markets. Xperia features Google Maps.

Not much talked about is the news from the offices of the number 9 in the mobile phone manufacturer of the world Sony Erricson. Sony Erricson is celebrating a decade of joint venture this October. Sony Erricson has produced some of the best quality music equipment and mobile phones. The joint venture never compromised on the quality and has always lived up to the expectations of its customers the world over. Sony as a sole entity has also ventured in to world of Television with private channels operating all over the world.

Google’s popularity, some patent right issues and Ice cream sandwich

Monday, October 17th, 2011

“We had a great quarter,” said Larry Page, CEO of Google. There is an increase in the number of Google+ users and we come to know from sources that the figure has crossed forty million.

Google chrome has also earned tremendous popularity around the world. Google co-founder and chief executive Larry Page addressing a conference call last Thursday announced revenues of $9.72 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2011. It was a 33% increase over third quarter 2010 revenues of $7.29 billion.

The main sources of income for Google have been from its own sites which contributed nearly sixty nine percent to the revenues amounting to $6.74 billion and from its partners that generated revenues amounting to $2.60 billion, or 27% of total revenues, in the third quarter of 2011.

That is quite some news for the 31,353 full-time employees Google employed till September 30, 2011, up from 28,768 full-time employees June 30, 2011. It must be pointed out that despite the recession in the American economy Google is fast heading towards progress.

Larry further said the performance has been like a gangbuster, obviously pointing to the companies that are up in war against Google.

Android is selling like hot cake. There are other companies who claim that Android is copying many features that are the registered property of these companies. They have filed suits against Google for infringement of patent rights.

There are mainly patent right issues with Samsung HTC Oracle Motorola and Microsoft.

These companies claim that Google has infringed many of their patent rights. Larry Page has a solution. Sources say that Google is going to buy about 17000 patent rights from Motorola. The main big buy is Motorola Mobility. Sold for about 12 billion dollars Motorola Mobility will no more be property of Motorola. It is going to be part of Google. On how Google is going to use and market ‘Mobility’ remains to be seen.

Ice cream sandwich

There one more good news for Android users.

Android is all set to appear in a new guise with upgraded version OS 4.0 which has been named as ICE CREAM SANDWICH. Larry Page will soon announce its launch. Most probably the announcement is expected by the 19th of October 2011. ICS will be launched in collaboration with Samsung’s Nexus Prime, a forthcoming Android smart phone for Google.

Other news is that Google has paid 500 dollars to settle a case that imputed Google of letting access of the search engine to float ads purported to be illegally addressed to the US customers appealing to buy Canadian drugs. Now that the case has been settled Larry Page is relieved and he could concentrate on the launch of ICS up in October. The official announcement is expected to come on the 19th of October 2011.

10 advantages of Android over an iPhone

Operating system is a platform on which a user can communicate with a hardware device (e.g. windows/LINUX for your desktop, Symbian for nokia phones). The increasing demand for greater operating speed on mobile devices and the urgent need for people to perform different tasks on the move led to the development of Android operating system. Android is a light weight operating system for mobile and tablet devices. Google purchased the initial developer of the software Android.Inc in 2005. It was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White.

Let’s take a look at 10 advantages that Android has over an iPhone:

  1. Execute multiple applications at once:

The iPhone operating system is very subtle and neatly designed operating system optimised for high performance and lower OS breakdown rate. However the one main drawback that is seen in the iPhone is that it allows multitasking but only in case of native applications such as mail, Phone to run in the background.

Android users on the other hand greatly benefit from the level of multitasking that the Android OS provides. Now listen to music, chat, and download data from the internet all at the same time.

  1. Android’s App Store’s growth potential:

Everyone agrees to the fact that Apple’s App Store currently boasts of about 380,000 applications and the Android APP store has about 294,000 odd apps. But the one thing to be taken into consideration is that because of its open source nature any developer is free to make changes and develop his own applications. Due to this fact research estimates that Android’s APP store will surpass iPhone’s APP store by late 2011

  1. Get multiple notifications at once.

The iPhone does not perform well as far as multiple notifications are concerned.  Because the notification display is restricted to a pop up design, it is unable to handle multiple notifications at once.

  1. Locked to the carrier

The biggest setback the iPhone has suffered is that AT&T. The iPhone comes bundled with AT&T carrier services while Android users have the freedom of choosing their own service provider.

  1. BLUETOOTH?

One question that iPhone users always are faced with is that “Don’t you have a Bluetooth on your device?” iPhone users have to browse to system settings every time they access the internet while on the other hand android lets you use widgets directly from your home screen.

  1. Social integration with a difference:

Android being a child company of the big giant Google has an integrated Social hub for all your social needs. Even iPhone provides social integration although through the use of third party apps which are but nowhere as seamless as Android is.

  1. Budget constraint:

Every major carrier with the exception of AT&T provides an android phone on a contractual basis. In addition Android phones are cheaper and provide performance almost comparable to that of an iPhone.

  1. Jail breaking not required:

A custom ROM can be built for an android phone which is equivalent to an iPhone jailbreak with the added flavour of customization for your phone.

  1. Widgets

Android allows you to keep desired applications on the screen and can be accessed just by a single touch. Making life truly simple, isn’t it?

iPhone 4S – rumors and speculation

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Canadian cell phone users have some good news this week. One of the biggest brands in the cell phones will launch its latest product in the Canadian market soon. Before actually getting to see, people have been hearing and reading about it for quite some time now. Some are of the opinion that the iPhone 4S from Apple is not up to their expectation. They say the new 4S is not any different from the existing iPhones available in the market. But the company has a completely different story to tell.

Whether it is to boost the sale of their latest product or for some real reason, it will only be known to the people when they actually hold one in their hands. The company has already broken the news that they have received nearly one million orders for their new iPhone 4S world wide. And they are anticipating the actual sales after the launch to the tune of two million more within a week. Is Apple weaving dream? Whether their dream can come to reality remains to be seen.

New phones always sell like hot cakes. But it does not take long for people’s taste to change. The important aspect is whether the product will prove its worth once it comes into the market. The fact is that mobile phone market is highly volatile. The enthusiasm does not take long to evaporate like steam in the air. People don’t think twice before switching to other product for a little advancement and differentiated feature. People change phones like clothes these days.

There is some more news from the offices of Bill Gates. Microsoft has thrown its Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” in the market with big expectations. But it seems that this dual core windows phone has not been welcomed by the phone fans with kind of enthusiasm Microsoft might have expected.

To be neutral it would not be wrong to say that phones are not what they are supposed to be. The basic function of a phone is its ability to offer communication that is strictly voice based. Cell phones have come to be phones only for the sake of name. With hundreds of other features the device calls for an urgent renaming. The capability of the device to make a call should be highlighted as just one of the other features of the device. The ‘Mango’ for example is a mini computer with dual core processor that has the capability to make a phone call. It has hundreds of features including a fast internet viewer. It seems that the company is not happy with the sales of its new product looking at the number of handsets sold. But it is always a good idea to be optimistic.

Motorola is going to do some Abracadabra very soon. There is news that it is in the final stages of announcing the discovery of a new portable machine. The magic box, it is rumored, will open on the 18th of this month. What comes out of it is still a secret. Most probably it is going to be the RAZR. Whispers suggest that the RAZR is a Droid as against Android which is sleek with dual core.

Let us hope and pray that the iPhone 4S does not come out to be just another iPhone with same features that are already there in other phones in its category. We can only wait till the magic box is open.

Google – You might even find God here

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Google is arguably without a doubt the best ever search engine and most extensively used on the World Wide Web (WWW). On an average Google search engine receives approximately a hundred million queries on a day to day basis. Founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, it is one of the most comprehensive search engines ever developed, Google’s search result is based on a priority rank algorithm called “PageRank”.

This algorithm checks back links so as to prioritize web pages according to the number of times they have been visited. The difference between this patented algorithm and the algorithm used by most other search engines at that time was that the other algorithms would rank pages based on the frequency of usage of search terms on the web page. On the other hand PageRank algorithm assigns ranking to pages that are most frequently visited by the user along with a host of other techniques that Google has kept secret with the specific aim of maintaining an upper hand over its competitors. Google is available in 124 different languages.

Different features of Google:

  1. Web Search: As the name suggests it is built to search for information over the World Wide Web. When a query is entered in the text box provided by Google followed by an Enter Google displays a list of results having keywords matching with those written in the query. The prioritization of displayed results is based on Google’s patented “PageRank” algorithm.
  2. Image search: Google has another feature for searching images. When a user enters a query in the text box, images relevant to that query are searched and the results are displayed. Recently Google added another feature to image searching which empowered the user to upload an image on the Google search engine and the search will return all the images that are related to that uploaded image.
  3. Google Maps: It is a non commercial mapping service and technology that Google provides in its wide array of services. Google maps are extensively used by third party websites or by different organizations to display their location. It is also widely used in navigation where it can be used to find the shortest possible route from location ‘a’ to location ‘b’. With different views provided by Google Maps, traveling has turned into a less cumbersome experience.
  4. Voice Search: In addition to normal search engine, Google also provides an innovative voice based search engine especially useful for the visually impaired people. As the name suggests one has to just speak out the query and Google will capture it.
  5. Translate: Google Translate is a translation service provided by Google free of cost and it provides on the fly translation between 58 different languages. Having information written in a different language will no longer be a hindrance to your productivity as Google translate takes care of all this. Google Translate not only translates single words but it translates long sentences and phrases too making information universally accessible.
