Rogers Communication Inc’s approach – innovation and development

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Rogers Communication is a pioneer in the field of wireless communication. It was the brain child of Edward S. Rogers Sr. who with his Rogers Vacuum Tube company began the first Toronto Radio Station. It was later on being given a new direction by Edward Roger jr. that the company spread its roots to various other dimensions. Reputation as well as turnover has increased in leaps and bounds.

The father of Roger communications is a genius who invented the first vacuum tube that could work on alternating current in the houses thus making radio reception in homes possible. But time stole him away from us. He died of haemorrhage at an early age of 38. Sadly the company’s businesses were sold but thankfully the name remained intact.

Then in the sixties, emerged Rogers’s jr., also called Ted, who steered the company such that a decade later Rogers communication became the leaders in cable communications. In 1980’s the company touched a new milestone with the cellular world.

In the world of phone systems the Rogers have made their mark. SE Telecom is uniquely associated with Rogers in marketing their business phone systems.  From simple phone systems to more intricate access, they will provide you anything. Like various other business phone systems, Rogers also provide you all the features.

Video conferencing is one of the necessary features of a business telephone. Now you can have all of your meetings done with anyone, anywhere on the planet, with the phone systems by Rogers. You could meet the entire team to chalk out your strategies on phone, without meeting them.

In any business if you are not able to provide competitive rates you can no way succeed. One good reason why Rogers have succeeded is that their rates are competitive. In business telephones, they value your money and give you very reasonable minute to minute rates. They record the usage of each second and you get accurate billing. Rogers wireless also provides a toll free number to handle all of your queries and grievances.

Rogers wireless has another tough competitor in the market in the arena of phone systems. Avaya also offers you the latest in business networking. This enables you to collaborate with the conference calling. They even voice that they can save you almost thirty to forty per cent on the bill in comparison to other companies. They provide you a software platform where you can handle multi-vendor unified communications fast.

Healthy competition brings in innovation and development. This is the case with Avaya phone systems and Rogers. Avaya has evolved from the regular UC to componentisation which has increased its speed in coordinating with decision makers as well as customers. This Componentisation is triggered with SIP giving additional support to communicating, video as well as messaging.

Another challenge that these two are facing in the market is CISCO, which is originally a Californian company. This company in also going on shoulder to shoulder with most companies in the field of business phones and VOIP systems.

Internet neutrality: An essential aspect to enjoy the full privileges of the Internet

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

The internet is a wide open space with an almost infinite level of information and data spread over several trillion websites. It is the single most powerful resource invented by mankind and an invention which has drastically changed the knowledge landscape in the few decades since it was launched. As such it becomes a bone of contention when one tries to censor or block certain aspects of the internet to the general public. The internet was founded on the principle of ultimate freedom and as such it is essential that this aspect of internet neutrality is maintained by all the players in this field.

Any attempt to restrict, curtail or censor information over the internet is an infringement on an individual’s right to information and a direct attack on the concept of internet neutrality. No internet service provider or government has the authority to impose its own will on internet neutrality. Unfortunately there are several companies in Canada which work against the principle of internet neutrality such as Eastlink, Bell Canada, Roger’s High Speed Internet, Telus etc. One of the only few exceptions was SR telecom which completely advocated internet neutrality.

These broadband telecom services using their sophisticated infrastructure have altered the kind of internet experienced by users on their network. Some favor particular websites, others prevent specific websites from functioning optimally. Yet others intentionally slow down specific types of internet file transfer communication. Their argument being that having spent billions of dollars on setting the necessary infrastructure they have every right to decide who and how users get to experience the internet over their networks.  But in the process they forget the simple fact that users are paying them with their own money and as such the question of how the internet is to be experienced is to be decided by the consumers and consumers alone.

There are two primary ways by which the telecom service providers have been working against the principle of internet neutrality in Canada. The first way in which they do this is by the technique of internet throttling or bandwidth redistribution or bandwidth throttling. What the telecom service providers do is that they allocate a certain percentage of their bandwidth to users. Once a user exceeds his bandwidth allocation, the broadband speed is drastically slowed down, his internet experience is compromised and he is left with virtually next to negligible speeds. It completely defeats the purpose of having a broadband as neither VoIP, voice calls, video calls, file sharing, nor online gaming work. Businesses also suffer a lot as most modern day telephone systems like those from Avaya heavily utilize the broadband for VoIP services and internet telephony. This is completely unethical as more often than not the broadband companies never mention this aspect of bandwidth throttling to the user when he/she signs up to use the service.

The second way in which the aspect of internet neutrality is compromised is by direct blocking of specific websites through the technique of IP blocking. Every website on the internet has a unique number assigned to it. It is much like the address of person’s house. Even if the owner of the website renames the website, which is akin to giving a fresh coat of paint to a house, the IP address remains unchanged. Thus while communist governments may block vast numbers of IP addresses, it is a completely unacceptable practice in democratic countries like Canada.

Android – Features, versions and more

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Android is software which is used in mobile phones as an operating system. The Android application runs on the Dalvik virtual machine. It runs on this machine because it can run multiple VM’s simultaneously. Android develops application with the help of java programming language.

This software was developed by Google and open handset alliance. The initial android software was purchase by the Google Company in the year 2005. Currently android has 200,000 apps and it also has an online market which is run by Google. Google decided to release the android code under the apache license which is completely free software.

Features of Android

  • The Dalvik virtual machine is specially optimized for cell phones
  • The browser is based upon the webkit engine.
  • Android software consists of both 2 D and 3 D graphics based on OpenGL ES 1.0 specification
  • You could save ringtones, music and images in any format like MPEG4, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF etc.
  • The facilities that this software provides in cell phones are camera, Bluetooth options, GPS, compass, and accelerometer.
  • Internet can be browsed with 3G as well as WIFI connections.
  • The other apps available in Android are available in all the phones like calendar, maps, contacts, messaging etc.
  • Android includes C and C++ libraries. The other libraries which are available in this system are C libraries, media libraries, LibWebCore a modern web browsing engine which is powered by Android browser and embeddable web view. SQLite is a powerful database engine which is available to all the applications.
  • Applications can be multitasked in Android.

The different versions of Android are

2.0 (Eclair) – It is the first in the series which includes new web browser and interface that supports HTML 5.

2.1 (Eclair) supports for voice controls on the entire OS. Apart from that it also includes new weather applications and phonebook applications.

2.2 (Froyo) included the JIT optimization and the Google Chrome V8 JavaScript engine.

2.3 (Gingerbread) – It improved the copy paste and soft keyboard features.

3.0 (Honeycomb) - It supports larger screen devices and introduced new  user interface features

3.1 (Honeycomb) - It was released in the year 2011. Google I/O allowed honeycomb devices to directly transfer content with the help of USB chords.

3.2 (Honeycomb) – This version included optimization for a broader range of screen sizes. It has a capacity to up load media files directly from the SD card

4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) – It is a combination of gingerbread version and honeycomb version. This version is yet to be released and will probably be released in the year 2011.

There has been a tough competition between iphone users and android users. If we go to see the percentage of iphone users, it comes up to some 32 percent Apple iphone users and 21 percent Android among the hunch users. Android is largely used in Google + applications. It is seen that Android disguises itself as an app on Google+ which has the capacity to record phone calls and gather the location of the handset.
